Kriterier för att avgränsa Sepsis från icke septiska infektioner fastställdes till förekomst av organdysfunktion. Man bedömde att SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) var det system som var bäst lämpat för att diagnostisera Sepsis.

• Sepsis:Life‐threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. • Organ dysfunction:An increase in the Sequential (Sepsis‐Related) Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score of 2 or more points. An acutechange in total SOFA score ≥ 2 points consequent to the infection.

The SOFA requirement is met by a minimum of 1 point increase in at least 2 organ systems or by a 2 point increase (or more) in a single organ system. The Sepsis-3 consensus now recommends that diagnosis of sepsis should be now based on the increase of at least 2 points in the Sequential [Sepsis-related] Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score in patients with a suspicion of infection.
